Functional testing

COPD screening

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

COPD is now the 3rd leading cause of death worldwide. A chronic, incurable disease, it remains underdiagnosed, even though early screening helps preserve our lung capacity.

If you have smoked at least 1 pack a day for 10 years (or ½ a pack for 20 years, i.e. 10 pack-years), screening is advisable even in the absence of symptoms. To this end, CIRCAE runs a programme in partnership with general practitioners: any patient meeting these criteria can benefit from screening.

How it works

The screening steps

01

Clinical questionnaire

Gathering symptoms, smoking history, occupational exposures and respiratory history.

02

Spirometry

Measurement of lung volumes and flows. A simple, non-invasive test carried out in a few minutes at the practice. It detects bronchial obstruction and assesses its severity.

03

Bronchodilator test

After inhaling a bronchodilator, a second spirometry assesses the reversibility of the obstruction and guides the differential diagnosis (COPD or asthma).

04

Interpretation and referral

Dr Desplan presents the results, establishes the diagnosis and proposes a suitable follow-up plan: smoking cessation, respiratory rehabilitation, inhaled treatment.

Signs requiring a prompt consultation

  • Breathlessness that suddenly worsens at rest or on exertion
  • Coloured (yellow, green) or blood-stained sputum
  • Fever associated with breathing difficulties
  • Chest pain on exertion or at rest

Respiratory therapy

CPAP & sleep apnoea

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) requires both medical and technical management. At the CIRCAE centre, two complementary practitioners provide complete follow-up for patients on therapy.

Patient journey

How it works

01

Prescription during the assessment

The doctor prescribes the analyses appropriate to the assessment carried out (CIRCASLEEP, CIRCABREATH, CIRCADIET, CIRCAMOVE).

02

Sample taken at the centre

The blood sample is taken directly at the CIRCAE centre by our specialist nurse, immediately following the consultation.

03

Results and interpretation

The results are sent to the prescribing doctor, who interprets them within the patient's clinical context.

04

Reimbursement

Analyses prescribed as part of a medical consultation are reimbursed according to the usual INAMI schedules.

Blood analyses are prescribed during the medical consultation; no separate appointment is required.

Body practices

Yoga & mindfulness meditation

Yoga and mindfulness meditation are offered at the CIRCAE centre as practices that complement preventive medicine. They form part of a care approach geared towards regulating the autonomic nervous system, managing stress and improving sleep quality.

The sessions are designed for patients of any physical condition. They adapt to each person's abilities and to the goals set during the health assessment.
